Why the knicker wetting?
Forget the game, it's in the past

Loads of players to come back. We have lost many first games before and came back to have a good season.

Old Trafford is out the way, now onwards and upwards for me.

five defenders on the bench, the back four sitting on the six yard line instead of pushing up, senior defenders not bothering to mark their main sttiker at set pieces, anaemic in attack, the manager laughing and joking with the opposing manager while we're getting a shoeing. no, everything's great :. Yes it will magically get better after today. Obviously that didn't work last season and nothing has changed but yeah it'll be fine right?

Today was predictable and quite frankly fucking pathetic and not for the first time.
When does it not become knicker wetting then?
Been obvious for a year now that Billic is not up to it and many have said it but yeah it's knicker wetting.

Bilić fucked up today by any standards.

The 20 minutes I watched today was embarrassing.

We have 37 games to go.

I wasn't pleased with today, far from it, however in the bigger picture it means little. Maybe the kick up the arse will be good in the longterm

Re: Why the knicker wetting?
With Lukaku they will hurt a lot of teams this season. OT away first game is a tall order for any team. But looking in the run up to the Spurs game, they are all winnable before that. The next three games will give us a better idea.

Re: Why the knicker wetting?
Today was awful but I've been watching us for over 40 years and Man Utd away is (with a few notable exceptions) always horrendous.

We have two of our best players to come back in and, hopefully, a really top class defensive midfielder.

We will therefore replace over 25% of our team with much better players so I will reserve judgement until a settled team has played together 3 or 4 times.

Re: Why the knicker wetting?
Orange, let me tell you why

The issue is not that we lost at Old Trafford. It's not even that we were outclassed. It's the concerns we should all ave about the tactical mistakes made by our manager - mistakes that contributed to this spanking.

First, we gave Man Utd far too much respect. This is not a great Man Utd side and it has no players who will go on to be Man Utd legends. Their defence is especially suspect, with Jones, Bailly and Blind all vulnerable.

That's what makes Bilic's decision to sit ten men behind the ball for the first hour unacceptable. It took all the pressure off their defenders - it's what Mourinho would have wanted us to do.

It was reminiscent of the dark days of Allardyce, and especially the final game of his last season where he lined up with ten men behind the ball against City away - even though we were safe and had nothing to play for. We lost 3-0.

But even Allardyce would never have placed a dimunitive striker up front on his own. The sight of us hoofing balls up from defence to the 5ft 9" Chicharito when he was flanked by two much larger centre halves was one of the most stupid pieces of tactical idiocy I have seen in a long time.

Then there's the set pieces. Arnautovic is 6'4" and built like a tank, yet Bilic had him taking all the free kicks. Again this is what Mourinho would have wanted. I might have understood if Arnautovic's free kicks were pinpoint accurate but they were terrible - they either didn't clear the first man or went straight to De Gea.

Why wasn't our biggest and strongest player in the box? This is insane. Noble was on the pitch and can float crosses in far better than any of Arnautovic's efforts.

Imagine if Man Utd had asked Lukaku to take the free kicks and you get some idea of how idiotic that was.

I give some small credit to Bilic for making the changes at the hour mark when there was still time to make a difference. I thought we were much better after the two subs came on - and even bettter when Masuaku was put out of his misery and subbed.

A lot of WHOers put Arthur in their line up before the game ahead of Cresswell - why? Have we forgotten that jaw-dropping handball against West Brom? You don't see that even in Sunday League. He does not have the mental capacity to play top flight football and we saw that again today with a performance that ought to be his last in our colours.

So that's why we are going to sleep tonight deeply concerned. We were without four first team players - a fact that got hardly a mention in the media love fest over Mourinho - but when they come back we will also need a manager who knows what he is doing.

Bilic let us all down today and it's not the first time.

Infidel

Seriously?

Firstly, this Man Utd team just went toe to toe with the best team in world football (Real Madrid) last week. There pre season games have been the best teams in the fucking world. No one is going to get much change out of this team, especially at Old Trafford. It was a write off from the beginning.

When has Arnie EVER scored a header? There's your answer.

The reality is mouhrinho had built a whole team of 6ft plus athletic bullies, just the way he likes it. And we got bullied as most teams would. If there's any big issue it is the fact that lanzini is the only person on the squad who might be able to unlock teams like this and we only have one of him. We need another creative midflelder (or get the new young lad up to speed).

Finally, I'm not sure he had a choice with Hernandez. Politically you don't pay 140k a week for a player not to start. caroll is unfit, shako isn't really match fit and fletcher has gone so we don't have a big target man for this type of game. That's just life.

Finally, it's always going to be hard to put in 4 new players at once in a team. So it's good to just put everyone in an let them fail early. And get to grips with the way things are.

Your knickers must be soaking!

Re: Why the knicker wetting?
I'd agree with the OP.

In recent history it seems we often have better seasons having lost the first game than when we've won the first game.

Not saying Bliic was spot on or completely wrong. Simply that the first game of the season is often an exception to how we play for much of the rest of the season.

Here's hoping, anyway

Re: Why the knicker wetting?
You cannot give the players and manager a pass just because it was the first game and a tough fixture. If we had won we would be heaping credit on them, so it has to work the other way too.

Four new signings in the side, months to prepare, training camps in Austria etc, yet when the talking stops they turn up and rollover for the home side. Nowhere near acceptable, and at least Bilic said as much even if there are some on here who are happy with it.
